It is certain that the song “Ngauleya” has been a milestone for the upcoming star, but he declares that more is yet to come from him.
“This album means a lot to me because just one year ago, I was a nobody without anything in life. But all of a sudden, I am on TV and my voice is heard on radio, I thank God,” says the John. Asked what the future looks like with the breakthrough in the industry, John says, “This album will lead me to a second one which will be greater.”
John would not have been what he is without a passionate promoter Sam Mwaba, a proprietor of a new record label in Lusaka “Crystal Studios”, who picked him from the blues to make him a star. “I owe my initial success and anything else I have obtained from my first album to Sam, he is a good man. He did not look at my face when I came to record my music but he heard my voice and signed me,” says John. John’s music career might just be budding, but with what he has in store for the industry, he could be Zambia’s envoy to international assignments. JOHN Chiti was last weekend at Uncle Joe’s Pub in Matero where he pulled one of the biggest crowds at a venue that has also hosted the likes of Amayenge, the Sakala brothers and Danny. The Crystal Studios and Entertainment leading singer, who has been riding the crown of the wave with his song, Ngoleya, has now proved that he is a darling of almost all the female fans whether playing in a township like Matero or some up-market like Woodlands. Here he was with some girls, most of them in skimpy outfits despite the chilly weather that the capital city has been experiencing in recent weeks, falling sober on each other in a bid to be as close to him as possible. How fame can change scenarios. This is a man, who before Sam Mwaba, director of Crystal Studios took under his record label, was unrecognised. No one would care to have a second glance at him anywhere. But now, it seems like he has to avoid the public, if he is to have a normal life. If that is what he desires, then the female fans that thronged Uncle Joe’s Pub would certainly not have any of that. Scantly dressed as they were, they all besieged him, trying to pose for a photo with him. And make no mistake, they were not drunk at all. Sober as they come. But here they were, almost hurting the poor artiste. If anything, the show revealed the need to possibly call State police at such venues, as one fan, Webster Chishimba, observed, the potential for disaster is there. Indeed, the show, pegged at K15,000, drew one of the biggest crowds at this venue that is fast becoming home to live shows. John, who is now used to stage work and does not appear to have any fright now, also did strum the guitar after the first break, something that most of these so-called musicians can dream of doing in their sleep. Thereafter, he played Ifindingile, the title-track to his album before unleashing the highly popular, Ngoleya. John was assisted by Chiko Chali and MC Wabwino, with whom they have collaborated on one of the tracks for the Top 10 Stand-Up Zambia comedians’ forthcoming album. His 14th career album actually.
